Hank Kluin, lifelong resident of Middletown, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, at Monmouth Medical Center (St. Barnabas Hospice), after a long and courageous battle with diabetes, and its complications. Hank grew up in Monmouth County, and as a teen loved hanging out in the Red Bank music scene, and was even part of a local band. His love and passion for music stayed with him all his life, and his gifts and talents were primarily used in church settings (mostly Grace Christian Church in Tinton Falls over many years), where he volunteered his time. Having studied only briefly at Brookdale Community College, most of what Hank learned was not in a formal setting. During the teen years, he apprenticed alongside the Kluin & Sons custom home family business, eventually learning the skills to build his own house one day, and then continuing on to do beautiful carpentry and leather work for the rest of his life -until he lost his eyesight. Hank was an artist at heart. In earlier years, he studied at Beval's Saddlery in Peapack, under the tutorage of the late Jack Burke, a master saddler from Ireland. Later, Hank started a side hobby of making military leather equipment which he sold mostly to his friends. Hank loved most things military and did re-enacting for many years. Formerly, he was a member of the 79th New York Infantry, followed by the 1st New Jersey Light Artillery (Clark's Battery), and then the 5th U.S. Cavalry (mounted). Hank served in the Army Reserves, but his dream was always to fly planes for the military-if not for a problematic knee injury. He was a member of the NSSA (North South Skirmish Assoc.) for many years, as well as a member of The Honourable Cordwainer's Company of Virginia, and The Company of Military Historians. In the late 80's, Hank went to Randy Merrell's school in Vernal, Utah, where he learned the art of bootmaking, and had fully intended on focusing on that-until the opportunity came up for him to purchase a business. In 1987, Hank became owner and saddler of F. Burgess & Company, a mail-order business of historical military saddlery (originally owned by Frank Burgess in Meriden, Conn.). Hank loved making horse equipment and accoutrements, and it broke his heart to lay it aside. Many are still (graciously) telling stories of his excellent, detailed, fine leather work -shipped all over the world.
Hank is predeceased by his mother, Marie Joan Kluin, sadly, dying only very recently. Surviving are his wife, Janet; a son, Noah; his father, Henry Jr.; a sister, Wendy of Middletown and her daughter, Jessica (and husband Coleman) Motley of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Visiting will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, with funeral services at 7:30 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that donations be made to Noah Kluin, and mailed to Smith Barney, 1030 Broad St., 3rd floor, Shrewsbury, NJ 07702 to benefit Noah's college education. Condolences may be emailed to

Dick Huisman Called To Final Reward

Wellsburg Farmer Suffers Stroke Monday Night; Funeral To Be Held Thursday Afternoon

Dick Huisman, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Huisman, aged 63, died at his home north of Wellsburg, at 11:45 Monday night, having suffered a stroke a few hours before.

Previous to his last illness, Mr. Huisman had apparently been in good health and had gone about his farm duties as usual. His death comes as a shock to everyone, including the family circle and a large number of relatives and friends in this section. Quiet and unassuming, Mr. Huisman was esteemed and respected by all who knew him.

Born in Ackley, September 10, 1878, Mr. Huisman reached the age of 63 years, 5 months and 29 days. He grew to manhood in this section and in 1902, at the age of 24 he was married to Tattie Ross, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Ross. Surviving are his widow, five sons and one daughter. They are Jerry, at Holland; William, at Parkersburg; Dick and Albert, at Wellsburg; and Henry and Gertie, at home. There are also twelve grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Peters and Mrs. Helmer Molendorp of Wellsburg, besides a host of other relatives.

The funeral will be at 1:00 o'clock on Thursday, March 12, at the home, with services later at the Second Christian Reformed church, in charge of Rev. R. H. Haan, the pastor.

Meint Huisman Wellsburg Stock Breeder Is Dead

Death Came Monday Afternoon At Iowa Falls Hospital; He Was Sick But A Few Days With Flu.

Meint J. Huisman, well known throughout central Iowa as a successful stock breeder, died at Ellsworth hospital, Iowa Falls, at 3 'clock Monday afternoon. Intestinal flu was the cause. He was confined to his home but a few days. A week before his death he was attending the business matters in town. His condition was not regarded as serious until Sunday when a doctor attended him. The doctor the next morning advised that he be taken to the hospital and he was removed to Iowa Falls in the forenoon. The end came for him a few hours later.

Mr. Huisman was 48 years old. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Huisman. He was born on the Huisman farm three miles north of Wellsburg and resided there all of his life. After his parents moved to Wellsburg, Meint remained on the home farm and operated the place in partnership with his father. The Huisman farm has for years been known among cattle breeders in central Iowa as an outstanding stock farm.

The Huisman herd of Shorthorn cattle was widely known throughout the state. The herd was established by the elder Huisman and during the past twenty years it had been continued by the son, who proved his worth as a stockman when he carried this herd of purebreds through the bad times when so many similar herds went under the hammer. The Huisman herds for years were shown at central Iowa fairs and they brought home their share of blue ribbons each season.

Leaves Large Family

Mr. Huisman is survived by his widow, six sons and one daughter, all of whom are at home. The sons are Herbert, Eugene, Lester, Eldon, Ralph and Mayo. The daughter's name is Wanda. All of the children are at home. Other surviving relatives are his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Huisman, four sisters and one brother. The sisters are Mrs. Earl Greany and Mrs. Jack Fischer from Wellsburg, Mrs. R. H. Renken of Pleasant Valley township and Mrs. C. H. Evans of Decatur, Iowa. The brother, Frank, resides at Wellsburg.

Funeral services will be at Wellsburg Thursday afternoon.

Three Members of Huisman Family Married 172 Years

Wellsburg, Ia.--A total of 172 years of married life is the record attained by three members of the Huisman family, early residents of Grundy county. Friday Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Huisman of Wellsburg, are celebrating their fifty-eighth wedding anniversary; in May Mr. and Mrs. Harm Huisman of Bridgewater, S. D., will observe their fifty-seventh wedding anniversary, and Mr. and Mrs. John Tjaden of Wellsburg will celebrate their fifty-seventh wedding date in June.

J. B. Huisman and Harm Huisman are brothers, and Mrs. Tjaden is their sister.

All three couples were early residents in Grundy county, and all three marriages were performed in Wellsburg. The three couples spent the first few years of their married life in Wellsburg, and 35 years ago the Harm Huisman family moved to South Dakota.

The J. B. Huismans are celebrating their anniversary as their children gather at the family home during the afternoon and evening. Mr. Huisman is 82 years old, and Mrs. Huisman is 78. Both are in good health.

They are the parents of six children: Mrs. Renke Renken of Aplington, Mrs. Jack Fischer, Mrs. Earl Greany and Frank Huisman, all of Wellsburg, and Mrs. C. H. Evans of Leon. The oldest son, Meinet, died a few years ago.

Harm Huisman is a year and a half younger than his brother, John. They are the parents of ten living children, including Mrs. Dick Miller of Ackley; Mrs. Lena Benning of Iowa Falls; Bertha, who lives in Idaho; Meint, Ed, John, Mrs. Jennie Witt, Mrs. Anna Witt and Mrs. Dorothy Detterman, all living in South Dakota, and Fred, who resides in Washington.

The youngest of the family trio is Mrs. Tjaden, who is 75 years old. She has spent practically all her life in Wellsburg and vicinity.

The Tjadens have six children, all of whom live around this community. They are Mrs. Ben Peters, Mrs. Albert Meyer, Meint, Otta and Pearl, all of Wellsburg, and Mrs. S. L. Dilley of Aplington.
